mountain in winter

At Vars, enjoy the beauty of the Alps of Provence and make the most of your winter holidays.

Situated on the Southern Alps, near Vars ski resort (at 1946m above sea level) and near the ski slopes, 4 star eco-sustainable hotel Névalhaia Le Chalet is set between the Fontbonne valley, in front of Peynier mountain, the larch forest of Châtelret and Paneyron peak.

Ski, snowboard, free rides, rides on snowmobiles or... on sledges with dogs, walks on foot or with snow shoes or... just enjoying the landscape...: in the Vars-Risoul La Forêt-Blanche area you can do all manner of winter sports, from the most adrenaline fuelled to the more sedate.

The start off point is at the foot of the slopes with the Fontbonne chair lift. You can then return on skis from the slopes on the top part of the Sibières, Escondus or Peynier chair lifts.

The ski schools – Ecole du Ski Français and Ski Ecole International -  are located at 1400 m or accessible with skis on from two connected chair lifts.

Vars and Risoul share the Forêt-Blanche area, with 185 km of marked ski and snowboard slopes in the forests or at high altitude, between 1650 m and 2750 m:

• For more experienced skiers, 43% (50 of 116) are black or red slopes

• lFor beginners and families, 57% (66 of 116) are blue or green slopess

• There are lots of snowparks

• For freeriders, there are many corridors on the reliefs of Eyssina and Chabrières and other places for less reckless off-piste skiers

• For alpine ski lovers, there are many itineraries, such as the famous Paneyron (starting from the hotel) and the in Crachet valley, starting from the Vars mountain

• The lifts are modern 20 chair lifts and gondolas (1 gondola, 1 pulsed gondola lift, 7 high speed chair lifts, 11 fixed-grip chair lifts) and 31 drag lifts

The sunlight of the Southern Alps is exceptional. There are around 2600 hours of sunshine throughout the year in Vars, which is 30% more compared to other places in the Savoy and High Savoy (around 2000 hours every year). There is however still plenty of snow and Vars-Risoul ski resort is open from December to April. This apparent paradox is due to the particular climatic conditions, where there is greater snowfall in autumn which brings the snow substrate and then very low night temperatures in winter, which preserve the snowpack. In order to improve safety, a new snowmaking system has been developed on the main Forêt-Blanche ski slopes. This means you can use the area from the beginning until the end of the ski season.

In winter the Col de Vars area seems an almost lunar landscape, covered with a thick snowpack that shines in the sun. The white-blue contrast is very intense. It is an ideal place for walks on foot or with snowshoes, or for practising cross-country skiing.

Altogether, Vars resort has 30 km of paths for those who like to walk or use snow shoes, with easily accessible mountain restaurants, which allow skiers and non skiers to meet for lunch on the terrace and enjoy exceptional views.

Vars also offers other mountain leisure activities, such as safaris in a snowmobile and excursions with MushAndCo sled dogs on the top of the Vars Sainte Marie chair lift, on the snowy slopes in the forest between Vars and Risoul.
